Richard Schwartz

Integrating psychedelic-assisted therapy and IFS

Richard C. Schwartz, Ph.D. is the creator of the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model. He began his career as a systemic family therapist and academic researcher.

Grounded in systemic thinking, Dr. Schwartz developed IFS in response to his patients’ descriptions of the different parts of themselves. He focused on the relationships between these parts and noticed that there were identical systemic patterns in the way they were organized in his patients. He also found that when the patients’ parts felt safe and could relax, the patients spontaneously felt trust, openness and compassion, which Richard Schwartz came to call the Self. He discovered that in this state of Self, patients knew how to relieve and heal their parts.

A featured speaker for many American professional organizations, Dr. Schwartz has published many books and over fifty articles on IFS.
